How Reading Changed My Life By Anna Quindlen

I like to get to know what a writer think about reading. Anna did a fabulous job digging into her personal experiences with reading books, but it seems to me too superficial or cursory review of books. I expected that she could do better than this.

In particular, the pleasure she felt while traveling to neighbor’s basement resonates with my excitement of meeting great books in a neighborhood used book store. I wish I had the exactly same neighbor at my early age. Borrowing books from a local library can stimulate more reading. I didn’t have this kind of resources in my original country, South Korea, I really envied her precious memory with books.

I am on the same page with her when she was talking about the future of book as computer and technology threatens the physical book form. I tried to read book on my laptop and ipod touch, but it didn’t satisfy my expectation. I couldn’t finish the book and even didn’t enjoy it. Instead, I had to pick it up from a library or bookstore.

I alway cherish someone else’s booklist as Anna did it: Ten books of a certain kind of situation. I just love it. It’s thrilling and exciting as if I peep into someone’s personal library. Some books definitely go to “to-read” list on goodreads.

My favorite quote from the book:

Books are the plane, and the train, and the road. They are the destination, and the journey. They are home.
